Works of Martin Heidegger (1889–1976) create an important metatext for the remarkable French writer and thinker Maurice Blanchot (1907–2003), from his prose and essays of the 1940s to the latest fragmentary books. The newly published notes from Blanchot's archive, dating back mostly to the 1950s, are indicative of his method of exploration of the German philosopher’s ideas through summary translation. The fragment selection and terminological choices made by Blanchot as a translator provide insights into the evolution of his own thought and give an idea of the reception of Heidegger’s thought in France in the middle of the 20th century, certain details of which can be specified thanks to the three-part – German-English-Russian – pronunciation of the paths it is forging through the language. The current edition includes notes of Blanchot dedicated to the major work of Heidegger – Being and Time (1927).
